“The Nationwide Building Society could have one of its customers in its boardroom for the first time in nearly a quarter of a century. The society is owned by 9 million savers and borrowers, who elect the directors who oversee the business. One customer, James Sherwin-Smith from West Sussex, has secured enough nominations from the society’s members to get onto the ballot paper. He says savers and borrowers do not have a big enough say in how the business is run. The election will take place at the next annual general meeting in July. In the past, members have tended to vote for directors who have been endorsed by the society’s bosses. It is not yet known whether Mr Sherwin-Smith will receive any official backing from the society.”
