Elect James Sherwin-Smith to represent Nationwide building society members

Nationwide 2026 AGM unofficial transcript, Member questions, and questions to the Society

The Nationwide AGM was held online only at 10.30am on Wednesday 15th July 2026.

Nationwide is yet to publish a transcript. I am therefore sharing a link to my own unofficial Nationwide 2026 AGM transcript. Note that I have annotated this document with my own comments that may be of interest.

Member questions and Society answers

Over 40 different Members had their question referenced at the 2026 AGM.

7 Members took advantage of the opportunity to address the meeting by video (including myself).

Over 50 questions were asked – some members took the opportunity to ask more than one question, and some Members asking similar questions received a grouped answer.

My categorisation of the questions referenced is as follows:

Unanswered questions

The Chairman offered the following and the end of the Q&A session

As I mentioned earlier on, we did have a lot of questions duplicated by Members, so we’ve answered them as best we can in a general sense, and if any have slipped through, we’ll answer them directly in the coming days to the person who has posed them, but we’ve done our best to not ask the same question over and over again. If anything comes in late in this meeting and we haven’t managed to answer, we’ll similarly look to come back to you individually

Kevin Parry OBE, Chairman

Therefore if you submitted questions that were left unaddressed at the end of the meeting, please do follow-up with the Society via the email address: [email protected]

Post-AGM questions

I submitted the following post-AGM questions the Society Secretary on Thursday morning:

AGM publications

  1. Will the Society publish a verbatim transcript of the AGM, as in previous years? If so, when is this expected to be available?
  2. Will the Society publish a recording of the AGM? If not, does the Society nevertheless retain a recording for its own records?
  3. If the AGM recording will not be published by the Society, does the Society have any objection to my publishing my own recording, or excerpts from it?
  4. When will the formal AGM minutes be published?
  5. Will the Society publish the full list of questions submitted by Members before or during the AGM, together with any written responses where appropriate?

AGM clarifications

  1. I believe a number of responses given during the meeting require clarification or correction. What is the appropriate process for raising these matters with the Board and seeking an authoritative response?
  2. A number of Members have contacted me with feedback regarding the AGM technology, including difficulties accessing the meeting and using the Q&A functionality. What is the best route for this feedback to be submitted so that it can be investigated and responded to?

Election administration

  1. Based on the published result, I believe I exceeded the threshold required for the return of my Member Nominated Candidate deposit. As I do not believe my £500 cheque was presented for payment, could you please confirm that it has now been securely destroyed?
  2. When does the Society expect to publish statistics on the use of Quick Vote for this year’s Election?
  3. I am again seeking nominations as a Member Nominated Candidate for 2027. Could you please confirm whether the current nomination form remains valid, or whether a revised version will be issued?

Society governance

  1. I am seeking Member support to requisition a Special General Meeting to propose amendments to the Society’s Rules. Could you please confirm the procedural requirements the Society expects Members to follow, including any verification process for supporting Members?
  2. Following Mike Rogers’ election and appointment as Chairman, I would be grateful if you could ask whether he would be willing to meet with me to discuss my proposals regarding enhancing Member Democracy and Society Governance.

Society response

The Society Secretary replied same day to acknowledge receipt and said it will “respond in due course” – and that:

We do object to you publishing your own recording or any excerpts of our AGM.

I replied immediately, but I am yet to hear back.

May I ask why the Society objects? This is a meeting of the Members and for the Members after all.

As I’ve maintained, and raised directly with you previously, it is scheduled at a deeply inconvenient time for most, and I think it is in the interest of all for those that were unable to attend to be able to watch the session at their leisure.

I do not recall seeing any warning that recording was prohibited, or any copyright notices, etc.

I will update this page when I hear further.
